About

Bobby "Blue" Bland's album *Blues at Midnight* was released in 2003 on Malaco Records. It was Bland's 12th album on Malaco, marking a productive period in his career after signing with the label in 1985. Some critics noted that Bland's voice may not have had the range of his earlier recordings and that the album sounded like a "slick, digital facsimile" rather than truly bluesy. However, others praised the album's high-caliber material and Bland's phrasing. *Blues at Midnight* was his last studio album, and he continued to tour until his death in 2013. The album includes interpretations of songs like Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and Z.Z. Hill's "I'm a Blues Man". It also features new soul-blues songs, including "Where Do I Go From Here," "I Caught the Blues From Someone Else," and "Ghetto Nights". Some found the attempts to modernize the sound, such as the police radio chatter in "Ghetto Nights," to be awkward.

Recording Info

*Blues at Midnight* was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Malaco Studios, and Emerald Sound Studios. Charles Hart, Jerry Masters, and Steve Melton served as recording engineers. Kent Bruce was the recording and remix engineer, and also mastered the album at Malaco Soul Hole. Tommy Couch and Tommy Couch, Jr. produced the album.

Personnel

Significance

Bobby "Blue" Bland, already a Blues Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee by this point, released *Blues at Midnight* late in his career, during a period when he was signed with Malaco Records. The album is considered a solid addition to his discography, though some critics felt it didn't reach the heights of his earlier work. Despite any mixed reviews, Bland's interpretation of "What a Wonderful World" was praised, and the album is seen as a testament to his enduring talent and status as one of the greatest blues and soul singers.

An unofficial version of *Blues at Midnight* was released in Russia in 2003.
