Crazy 'bout Flip, Vol. 1 (1947-1949) is a compilation album by Flip Phillips, released in 2001 by Ocium Jazz. The album is a chronological tribute to Flip Phillips, mapping his adventures as a versatile participant in various sessions produced by Norman Granz. The recordings, mostly as a leader, were carried out by Flip for Norman Granz's Mercury-Clef recording company. This compilation showcases Phillips's early studio recordings and his contribution to the success of the Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) concerts. The album features a variety of sessions. Tracks 1-4 are believed to have been recorded in the autumn of 1947 (though some sources say January 1949), featuring trumpeter Howard McGhee and a rhythm section including Hank Jones, Ray Brown, and J.C. Heard. Tracks 5-7 are from February 1949, tracks 8-9 from either August 28 or September 24, 1949, and tracks 10-13 from December 5, 1949. The album concludes with a 16-minute JATP jam on Juan Tizol's "Perdido," recorded live at Carnegie Hall on September 27, 1947, featuring Howard McGhee, Bill Harris, Illinois Jacquet, Hank Jones, Ray Brown, and Jo Jones. The enhanced CD also contains a multimedia program playable on CD-ROM.
